About Mastering Byzantine Polyphony

Mastering Byzantine Polyphony is a teaching system dedicated to restoring precision, structure, and polyphonic logic to Byzantine music.

It exists because the current state of the field is broken. Specifically:

  • Pedagogy avoids measurable definition and repeatable results
  • Core theoretical claims contradict musical reality
  • Polyphony is dismissed as foreign to protect incoherent theory

These are technical failures, not just matters of taste. This project confronts them directly.

About the Author

Ari Koufogiannakis is a musician and composer working on a complete reconstruction of Byzantine music using Western notation and polyphonic structure. The work is based on modal harmony, acoustics, and fully notated material, not interpretive secrecy of mystical intervals and melismata. The goal is not reform for its own sake but to make Byzantine music teachable, testable and extensible.
